Socket head screw
Socket head screws with hex socket by KIPP
The KIPP range of socket head screws includes various styles, materials and standards. Depending on material and its properties, socket head screws are made of untreated stainless steel or blackened or electro zinc-plated steel. Screws available from KIPP are manufactured according to DIN 912, DIN EN ISO 4762 and DIN 6912. Due to their versatility in use, hex socket head screws are suitable for all metalworking sectors such as machine construction, automotive or aerospace.
Styles of socket head screws by KIPP
KIPP offers socket head screws in various styles with hexagon socket and standard threads. You can select between models with full thread or partial thread. Socket head screws with full thread are threaded right up to the head. Screws with partial thread are only threaded part way up the shank.
KIPP also offers socket head screws with a low head. These options are very useful if the screw head is to be countersunk into the workpiece. Socket head screws are often used in places where there is strong vibration. Without suitable locking measures, screws can come loose. To prevent this problem, KIPP offers socket head screws with thread lock. This stops screws from loosening on their own and they can be reused several times.
The correct socket head screw size is crucial
Due to the wide range of possible applications for hex socket head screws, KIPP offers a wide range of different options and models according to DIN 912, DIN EN ISO 4762 and DIN 6912. To find the appropriate screw for your application, it is important to know the correct dimensions. Please find below an overview of the various abbreviations, dimensions and their respective values. Basis for every decision is the thread diameter (D). As metric threads are commonly used in Europe, the diameter is preceded by the letter M (for metric). A thread diameter of 8 mm is therefore an M8 socket head screw. The overall length of the screw is also decisive. It is added to the diameter designation. If the length would be 40 mm, we would have an M8x40 socket head screw. Other dimensions and specifications are derived from DIN 912, DIN EN ISO 4762 or DIN 6912. Due to standardization, all KIPP socket head screws feature a standard thread. Different thread pitches, such as fine threads, are not available. The thread pitch is therefore not specified.
Depending on the subsequent area of application, the grade of the socket head screw also plays an important role. The grade consist of two numbers separated by a point. The figure before the point shows the tensile strength in N/mm2. Multiplying it by 100 calculates the force at which the material will deform or even break. The figure after the point indicates the yield point of the screw. This is first multiplied by the figure in front of the point and then by 10. The result is the yield point. For example, a DIN 912 socket head screw with a grade of 8.8 has a tensile strength of 800 N/mm2 and a yield point of 640 N/mm2.
It all depends on the lock
There are different methods of securing a socket head screw. You should consider in advance whether the screws to be secured need to be removed regularly. If this is the case, you should refrain from using a liquid threadlocker. Although this prevents the screw from loosening by itself, it is destroyed when it is unscrewed. The liquid threadlocker has to be replaced afterwards.
The thread lock by KIPP, on the other hand, reliably secures your cap screw even after repeated loosening and tightening - no loosening or falling out due to vibration, impact or shock. To secure screws without thread lock against loosening, we recommend the use of hex nuts with a polyamide locking insert.
